Journalists worried about dismissals from state-owned media

Moroni, Comoros - The directors of the Comoros Radio and Television Corporation and Al-Watwan, a pro-government daily, were relieved of their functions, official sources in Moroni told PANA Saturday.

Djaffar Mohamed Abdouloihabi, protocol director of President Sambi, and Ahamada Djaé, information director general, were however promoted.

The former collaborator of the head of state succeeded Mrs Radhua Abdou, the wife of the Head of the Executive of the Grand Comoro island at the head of the radio and television corporation.

The news was badly received in areas close to the Presidency, where the dismissal of Abdou was described as "a punitive expedition against Mr Abdou Loihabi, who had refused to play the role the union wanted to assign her.

"The president of the Republic can appoint and revoke senior civil servants," said Ahmed S. Toihir, the secretary general of the government of the island, suggesting however a minimum of compliance with the rules, pointing out "this appointment smacks of political clientelism."

For the Comorian journalist, generally well-informed of the activities of the presidential palace, the series of dismissals and appointments is no good omen.

"One does not leave the Holy of Holies for a mere division, even the National Radio and Television Corporation. This is all about locking up the media," the colleague added while urging people to display "prudence and above all, vigilance in future."
