South Africa to 'follow up' on Comoros - Mbeki

South Africa will follow up the situation in the Comores, president Thabo Mbeki told reporters on Tuesday.

 

Speaking at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria, Mbeki said South Africa would " continue following up" the situation on the island of Anjouan.

 

Comoran and African Union troops invaded Anjouan to try to take control from Mohamed Bacar, whose election has not been recognised by the international community.

 

Mbeki who was supposed to receive credentials from the Comoran ambassador Ahmed Mohamed Thabid.

  
  Thabid did not show up because of the events on the three island archipelago.

Mbeki was supposed to be welcoming a total of four ambassadors from Nigeria, Bangladesh, Cameroon and the Comores. He only welcomed two. He said the Nigerian ambassador has been "delayed".

 

Bangladeshi ambassador M D Shahidul Islam said it was important for the two countries to consolidate ties to which Mbeki said the two nations should address common challenges such as poverty.

 

" We are committed... to do everything possible to strengthen these relations between our countries," said Mbeki.

 

Cameroon ambassador Adrien Kauambo Jomague said it was important to promote and improve relations between both countries.

 

With reference to climate change, Mbeki said the two countries needed to discuss the preservation of tropical forests in Cameroon.

 

"Those forests are very important," he said.
